Visas for Myanmar

Note: The visa situation changes regularly, so double-check the information you read here with your nearest Myanmar embassy.

Processing times for visas for Myanmar can be quite lengthy – up to four weeks in some countries. By far the easiest place to apply is at the embassy in Bangkok (see below).

Below are the general requirements for applying for tourist visas and business visas. Requirements might vary depending on your nationality and where you are applying.

Myanmar Tourist Visas

Tourist visas are valid for three months from the date of issue. They allow a stay in Myanmar of 28 days from the date of entry.

The documents that are generally required for a tourist visa for Myanmar are:

  • A completed application form (sometimes two copies)
  • Your passport
  • A photocopy of the information page of your passport
  • Two colour passport-size photographs
  • Application fee

In some countries you will also need to show a copy of your flight bookings or a confirmation from a tour company.

Myanmar Business Visas

Business visas are valid for three months from the date of issue. They allow a stay of 70 days in Myanmar from the date of entry.

The documents that are generally requiremed for a 70 day business visa are:

  • A completed application form
  • Your passport
  • A photocopy of the information page of your passport
  • Two colour passport-size photographs
  • A letter of invitation from a registered Myanmar company
  • A copy of the inviting company’s certificate of registration
  • Application fee

Note that six-month multiple entry visas are also after you have held at least one single-entry business visa. It is best to consult with your inviting company in Myanmar if you intend to apply for a six-month business visa. Your need to have this type of visa will need to be stated clearly in the invitation.

It is also possible to obtain a one-year multiple entry visa. Generally you will need to have previously held at least one six-month multiple-entry business visa or several single-entry business visas before you can get this.

Myanmar Business Visa on Arrival

Business visas are available on arrival at Yangon International Airport for citizens of Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States of America and Viet Nam.

The documents required are as above and the fee is US$50. This has been in force since June 1st 2012, so all airlines should now be aware. However, it is still a good idea to check with the airline in case they decide to deny you boarding because they are unaware of the rules.

Full details about the business visa on arrival requirements can be found at this website.

Applying for a Myanmar Visa in Bangkok

Bangkok is by far the easiest place to apply for a Myanmar visa. The requirements are basically as above. Standard visa processing time in Bangkok is two days but they can do next day or same day service if you show a flight booking that justifies processing it that quickly and pay an extra fee.

The embassy is located at 132 Sathorn Nua Rd. From Surasak Skytrain stop, walk in the opposite direction from the river for about 400m. The Embassy will be on your left.

There is a copy shop further down the street (there’s a sign to it on the wall opposite the entrance to the visa section of the embassy) where you can obtain application forms, photographs and get photocopies. The person running the shop is helpful and will answer basic questions about the application.

Applications are accepted between 9am and 12pm. Passport collection is from 3:30pm-4:30pm.

Queues can be lengthy during tourist high season (especially October to March), so be prepared to spend a good while there. Or else have an agent process it for you.

Myanmar Embassies Worldwide

Only a few of the embassies of Myanmar have working websites with information about visa requirements. The ones that do are listed below:

Embassy of Myanmar in the USA

As of 1st May 2013, the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore will only issue Myanmar visas to Singaporeans and people with long term resident cards or work visas. They will recommend you go to Bangkok, if you turn up there expecting to secure a Myanmar business or tourist visa.
